In 1915, a group of enlightened gentlemen in Kunming actively advocated the establishment of Kunming's water supply industry with the aim of "seeking the health of urban people and the fire safety of society" and "paying attention to beverages, spleen health, and convenience for the people". With the approval of Tang Jiyao, the governor of Yunnan at that time, investment and stock collection were carried out to establish a water supply plant. The water plant was completed in August 1917 and officially delivered water in May 1918. The water plant takes Cuihu Jiulong Pool as its water source, covers an area of 5977.5 square meters, and has a daily water supply of 1034 cubic meters. The total length of the pipeline is 9.5 kilometers, and each cubic meter of tap water is 5 cents, 3 cents, and 5 cents silver dollars.

After nearly a century of development, Kunming Water Supply Group Co., Ltd. has become a comprehensive large-scale water supply enterprise group integrating water source development, water supply production and operation, water quality monitoring, water supply engineering design and construction, and other supporting services. Undertaking the production, living, and fire water supply tasks for approximately 5.6 million people in Kunming city. The company currently has 2066 employees, and the group company has 7 wholly-owned, controlling, and participating subsidiaries, including 2 controlling companies: Kunming General Water Supply Co., Ltd. and Yunnan Fengyuan Water Supply Co., Ltd; Three wholly-owned companies: Kunming Qingyuan Waterworks Co., Ltd., Yunnan Water Engineering (Group) Co., Ltd., and Kunming Water Supply Engineering Design Institute Co., Ltd; Participated in 2 companies: Provincial Dianzhong Water Diversion Phase II Project Company and China Railway Biyuan Water Management Kunming Co., Ltd. The group company has 2 large reservoirs, 14 water treatment plants, and a designed daily water supply capacity of 2.17 million cubic meters in the city. The actual daily water supply has reached 1.35 million cubic meters, and the highest daily water supply has reached 1.47 million cubic meters. The total length of DN100 and above main pipes in the water supply and distribution network is 6515 kilometers, and the water supply service area has exceeded 800 square kilometers. At present, the total assets of the group company have reached 20.4 billion yuan, and the production and operation situation is stable with progress.

Kunming is located in the watershed of the Yangtze River, the the Pearl River and the Red River, with an average annual water resources of 6.14 billion cubic meters, 714 cubic meters per capita, and less than 200 cubic meters per capita in the Dianchi Lake basin, far below the provincial and national level. Kunming is one of the cities with serious water shortage in China due to its insufficient water resources endowment. Before 2007, the main urban water source in Kunming was the Songhuaba Reservoir. Under the leadership of the municipal party committee and government, the group company has accelerated the construction of water supply facilities, raised construction funds through multiple channels such as government support, utilization of foreign investment, and self financing by enterprises, and actively carried out cross basin water transfer project construction. As the project owner, the group company has successively undertaken the development and construction of water sources such as the Zhangjiu River diversion and water supply project, the Qingshuihai project, and the construction of water supply supporting facilities in Chenggong New Area. The completion of the Zhangjiu River project has greatly improved the safety guarantee rate of urban water supply. Since March 25, 2007, it has completely bid farewell to the history of using Dianchi Lake water, especially the continuous drought since 2009. Yunlong Reservoir has played an irreplaceable role in providing raw water guarantee. In 2020, the Waterfall Park and Shangduilong Emergency Water Supply Project were completed. Currently, Kunming city has formed three main water supply sources, namely Songhuaba, Yunlong, and Qingshuihai Reservoir. In addition, the "Three Reservoirs and One River" joint dispatch pattern supplemented by the emergency water source of Niulanjiang has greatly improved the water supply guarantee rate of Kunming city.

The Kunming urban water supply network has formed a pattern of composite water supply consisting of a circular network and a branched network, with the circular network system radiating outwards from the center of the first and second rings. Based on the layout of the water plant and the distribution of the pipeline network, the group company has explored effective experience in the joint scheduling of multiple water sources and water supply pipelines in years of urban water supply management practice, ensuring the safe and stable operation of water supply in our city.
